Wi-Fi Alliance® applauds Expanding Flexible Use in Mid-Band Spectrum NOI

Austin, TX and Washington D.C. – August 3, 2017 – Wi-Fi Alliance® applauds the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) adoption of "Expanding Flexible Use in Mid-Band Spectrum” Notice of Inquiry (NOI). Wi-Fi Alliance is particularly encouraged by the NOI’s focus on extending unlicensed operations to the 5.925-6.425 GHz and 6.425-7.125 GHz bands.

Over the last 20 years, the growth in Wi-Fi® usage has exceeded all expectations. Today’s Wi-Fi exemplifies innovation by carrying more data traffic than any other wireless technology and delivering high-performance connectivity to billions of business, education, enterprise, and government users who depend on Wi-Fi connectivity every day. Spectrum access needed for Wi-Fi functionality, however, has not kept pace with Wi-Fi growth. A recent study predicts degradation in Wi-Fi performance and availability due to significant spectrum shortfall in the near future. With this NOI the FCC takes a significant step toward alleviating projected Wi-Fi spectrum shortfall, and most importantly, toward ensuring that Americans continue to experience tremendous socioeconomic benefits delivered by Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi Alliance looks forward to working with the FCC on this important initiative.

Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast™ delivers high-resolution multimedia experience

Miracast

New features deliver immersive HD and 4K Ultra HD content display

Austin, Texas – July 26, 2017 – As Wi-Fi® users embrace higher quality multimedia content on their mobile devices, Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast™ has added new capabilities to better support high-definition (HD) and 4K Ultra HD content streaming for a more immersive wireless viewing experience. New Miracast® features operate through existing Wi-Fi network connections or widely-adopted Wi-Fi Direct® and introduce performance enhancements to display multimedia content seamlessly between devices. Miracast enables high-resolution content streaming between smartphones, tablets, cameras, televisions, projectors, and car infotainment systems, and eliminates the need for cables.

Miracast delivers content for both home entertainment and enterprise scenarios, and builds on a foundation of existing Wi-Fi Alliance® technology programs including the latest generation of Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ ac, providing increased data rates and enhanced performance. Devices connect to each other directly or through existing Wi-Fi networks, and connections are secured with WPA2™ advanced security features. Miracast supports new audio/video (A/V) formats, extending battery life in mobile devices. Miracast requires stricter latency standards, higher quality of A/V performance, and better A/V synchronization to assure users enjoy their Wi-Fi viewing experience.

“Miracast enables users to seamlessly experience the content they want, where and when they want it,” said Edgar Figueroa, president and CEO of Wi-Fi Alliance. “Miracast gives Wi-Fi users freedom to display high-quality content while retaining ease of use, multi-vendor interoperability, and security that is shared by Wi-Fi CERTIFIED products.”

A fundamental shift in the way users consume content is underway, with users embracing Wi-Fi to view rich multimedia on their mobile devices which rivals content previously consumed through other platforms. Recent research shows the time consumers spend watching video content on mobile devices now equals the time spent watching that content on TVs. Miracast is widely adopted across a variety of devices, with more than 7,000 devices certified – including most leading smartphone, tablet, and smart TV brands – and uses simple setup and configuration to support premium content streaming including Blu-ray films, live television events, and other copy-protected digital content. Only Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast devices provide assurances for delivering a good user experience.

Wi-Fi Alliance® congratulates FCC Chairman Pai on Draft Mid-Band NOI

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a draft Expanding Flexible Use in Mid-Band Spectrum Between 3.7 GHz and 24 GHz Notice of Inquiry (NOI). The NOI bridges the gap between low-frequency and high-frequency bands by examining the frequencies between 3.7 GHz and 24 GHz.

Austin, TX and Washington D.C. – July 14, 2017 – Wi-Fi Alliance® congratulates FCC Chairman Pai on the release of the draft “Expanding Flexible Use in Mid-Band Spectrum Between 3.7 and 24 GHz” Notice of Inquiry (NOI). With the adoption of this NOI, the FCC will take a significant step toward expanding wireless broadband connectivity for all Americans. Wi-Fi Alliance is particularly encouraged by the NOI’s focus on extending unlicensed operations to the 5.925-6.425 GHz and 6.425-7.125 GHz bands. Each day, Wi-Fi® users deploy millions of additional Wi-Fi devices, whose delivery of content and services will soon exceed the capacity of the limited amount of unlicensed spectrum available. A forward-thinking spectrum policy, such as the one outlined in the NOI, is needed to supplement that capacity for consumers, businesses, and government users who depend on Wi-Fi for their vital connectivity needs. Wi-Fi Alliance looks forward to working with the FCC on this important initiative.

Wi-Fi Alliance® delivers Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ home designs

Wi-Fi Home Design

New certification brings professionally designed, preinstalled Wi-Fi® networks to new homes

Austin, TX, June 14, 2017 – Wi-Fi Alliance® is introducing a certification program that brings professionally designed, builder-installed Wi-Fi® networks to new homes, delivering a great user experience throughout the whole home. Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Home Design™ brings enterprise design practices for planning and installing Wi-Fi networks to the new home construction industry, resulting in consistent, whole-home coverage and an exceptional Wi-Fi experience from the day the home owner moves in. In the same way that new homes are constructed with well-planned lighting and electrical schemes, home buyers will now benefit from integrated Wi-Fi networks that set a new standard in home network design and installation.

Wi-Fi Home Design provides home builders with an industry-approved network installation plan based on exacting Wi-Fi deployment guidelines. The guidelines define criteria for access point (APs) placement to eliminate dead spots and deliver strong Wi-Fi coverage throughout the entire home and outdoor spaces, including garages and patios. Wi-Fi Home Design enables reliable connections in home environments with many client devices and provides great integration with connected smart home products including Wi-Fi voice-activated wireless speakers, security cameras, door locks, light bulbs, thermostats, and appliances. Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ APs are required, ensuring high-performance, security, and interoperability.

“We are committed to a great user experience for our Wi-Fi fans in all areas of their lives, and we now bring our expertise in developing certification programs to residential home Wi-Fi network design,” said Edgar Figueroa, president and CEO of Wi-Fi Alliance. “Homes that are certified for Wi-Fi Home Design provide whole-home Wi-Fi coverage with professionally designed networks that are ready for demanding applications.”

Companies spanning Wi-Fi infrastructure, mobile device, consumer electronics, smart home, and home building industries worked in Wi-Fi Alliance to define criteria for Wi-Fi Home Design. The requirements consider the increasing number of smart home devices expected in homes over the next decade, and the growing demand for data-intensive usages such as virtual reality and simultaneous 4K video streams. Wi-Fi Home Design will scale to accommodate both the growth in Wi-Fi devices and high-bandwidth applications.

Lennar, one of the largest U.S. homebuilders, is the first to offer new homes featuring Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Home Design. Lennar has announced that next month they will begin offering Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Home Design as a standard feature as part of its Everything’s Included program – which also includes smart home technology and wireless entertainment powered by some of the world’s top consumer brands.

“Reliable whole-home Wi-Fi is as essential to the way people live today as central air conditioning,” said David J. Kaiserman, president of Lennar Ventures. “Wi-Fi Home Design sets an unmatched standard for residential Wi-Fi networks that assures homebuyers their new home will allow them to enjoy a truly connected lifestyle – with smart devices that enhance security and comfort, streaming entertainment or whatever the future holds.”
