Wi-Fi CERTIFIED HaLow™: Wi-Fi® for IoT applications (2021)

Wi-Fi CERTIFIED HaLow offers a single, open, industry standard that can address many IoT applications in multiple industries. It combines the reach, robustness, scalability, and energy efficiency required by IoT systems, with the added benefits and capabilities of Wi-Fi. Operating in sub-1 GHz radio frequency spectrum and using narrower channels enables Wi-Fi HaLow to provide up to 100 times longer range than other IoT technology options. It can penetrate through building materials, ensuring successful home and building automation installations without costly meshes or repeaters, and connect devices approximately one kilometer or more from the AP while other IoT technologies were designed to only reach 10 meters. Wi-Fi HaLow uses several methods to achieve higher energy efficiency than most existing low power WANs and wireless PAN technologies. Using new MAC improvements and sleep modes, Wi‑Fi HaLow supports devices powered by coin cell batteries; it can effectively handle sensor networks in varied environments, with increased capacity to support up to 8,191 devices per SSID.

Wi-Fi HaLow facilitates a more holistic approach to wireless connectivity. Because it is Wi-Fi, it is more easily integrated with existing Wi-Fi networks, supports native IP networking, and provides the latest in Wi-Fi security. High data throughput and low-latency architecture allow IoT devices to transfer secured data to cloud-based application servers. When field upgrades are necessary, Wi-Fi HaLow provides the capacity for efficient, secure over-the-air updates, minimizing device downtime. This can all be done without the need for proprietary gateways or hubs used by non-Wi-Fi network architectures commonly used in other IoT systems.

Wi-Fi HaLow clearly meets, and in many cases exceeds, the key requirements for IoT connectivity and applications. The ability to accommodate a massive number of IoT use cases spanning in range, data rate, and energy efficiency is paramount for IoT technology to succeed. Wi-Fi HaLow sub-1 GHz operation and narrow channels enable a longer range, approximately one kilometer, as well as improved penetration through walls and obstructions. A unique power saving feature suite enables lower device energy consumption yielding increased energy efficiency, multi-year battery operation, and support for coin cell batteries. It supports a wide variety of data rates that accommodate use cases from low data sensor networks to high data rate video systems. With adoption of the latest Wi-Fi generation increasing, product vendors and service providers can trust Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ will distinguish Wi-Fi 6 products and networks that meet the highest standards for security and interoperability.   • Orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA): effectively shares channels to increase network efficiency and lower latency for both uplink and downlink traffic in high demand environments
  • Multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO): allows more downlink data to be transferred at once and enables an access point to transmit data to a larger number of devices concurrently
  • 160 MHz channels: increases bandwidth to deliver greater performance with low latency
  • Target wake time (TWT): significantly improves battery life in Wi-Fi devices, such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • 1024 quadrature amplitude modulation mode (1024-QAM): increases throughput in Wi-Fi devices by encoding more data in the same amount of spectrum

Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Easy Connect™ Technology Overview (2022)

Providing a user-friendly, secure process for connecting Wi-Fi® devices to a network is essential for the continued growth and penetration of Wi-Fi technology. This is especially true for market segments such as smart home and Internet of Things (IoT) that include devices with limited or no interface. Configuring a Wi-Fi device to connect to a network requires the device to be given network information and security credentials. Adding devices with little or no user interface to a network can be cumbersome and is dependent upon vendor implementation. Using a standardized, simple method to configure Wi-Fi devices gives users more choice in selecting products from different vendors and provides a harmonized user experience across the ecosystem.

Wi-Fi Alliance® has created Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Easy Connect™ to simplify the process for adding devices—including those with little or no user interface—to a Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi Easy Connect™ establishes a standardized mechanism for configuring Wi-Fi devices with greater simplicity, making setup as effortless as scanning a product’s quick response (QR) code, or touch using near field communication (NFC) tag to enable use on a Wi-Fi network.

Wi-Fi Easy Connect is an asset to the Wi-Fi Alliance portfolio, bringing new mechanisms that enable easy network setup and provisioning of client devices, while providing a better user experience, enhanced security, and support for IoT device provisioning.

Wi-Fi Alliance® introduces Wi-Fi CERTIFIED WPA3™ security

Next generation Wi-Fi® security for personal and enterprise networks

Austin, TX – June 25, 2018 – Wi-Fi Alliance® introduces Wi-Fi CERTIFIED WPA3™, the next generation of Wi-Fi® security, bringing new capabilities to enhance Wi-Fi protections in personal and enterprise networks. Building on the widespread adoption of WPA2™ over more than a decade, WPA3™ adds new features to simplify Wi-Fi security, enable more robust authentication, and deliver increased cryptographic strength for highly sensitive data markets. As the Wi-Fi industry transitions to WPA3 security, WPA2 devices will continue to interoperate and provide recognized security.

WPA3 security continues to support the market through two distinct modes of operation: WPA3-Personal and WPA3-Enterprise. All WPA3 networks use the latest security methods, disallow outdated legacy protocols, and require use of Protected Management Frames (PMF) to maintain resiliency of mission critical networks. Key capabilities of WPA3 include:

  • WPA3-Personal: more resilient, password-based authentication even when users choose passwords that fall short of typical complexity recommendations. WPA3 leverages Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE), a secure key establishment protocol between devices, to provide stronger protections for users against password guessing attempts by third parties.
  • WPA3-Enterprise: offers the equivalent of 192-bit cryptographic strength, providing additional protections for networks transmitting sensitive data, such as government or finance. The 192-bit security suite ensures a consistent combination of cryptographic tools are deployed across WPA3 networks.

Wi-Fi Alliance introduced enhancements and new features earlier this year for Wi-Fi Protected Access®, the essential family of Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ security technologies, to ensure WPA2 maintains strong security protections as the wireless landscape evolves. WPA2 continues to be mandatory for all Wi-Fi CERTIFIED devices. As market adoption of WPA3 grows, the new generation of Wi-Fi security will become required for all Wi-Fi CERTIFIED devices. WPA3 maintains interoperability with WPA2 devices through a transitional mode of operation, and Wi-Fi users can remain confident they are protected when connected to secured Wi-Fi CERTIFIED networks.

Wi-Fi Easy Connect™ enables users to securely add any device to a Wi-Fi network using another device with a more robust interface, such as a smartphone, by simply scanning a product quick response (QR) code. Wi-Fi Easy Connect and WPA3 represent the latest evolution in Wi-Fi Alliance programs to ensure users receive a positive experience while remaining securely connected as the security landscape evolves.

Wi-Fi Alliance® introduces low power, long range Wi-Fi HaLow™

New technology will extend Wi-Fi® solutions for the Internet of Things

Las Vegas, NV, January 4, 2016 – With industry momentum mounting around a low power Wi-Fi® solution, Wi-Fi Alliance today announced the Wi-Fi HaLow™ designation for products incorporating IEEE 802.11ah technology. Wi-Fi HaLow operates in frequency bands below one gigahertz, offering longer range, lower power connectivity to Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ products. Wi-Fi HaLow will enable a variety of new power-efficient use cases in the Smart Home, connected car, and digital healthcare, as well as industrial, retail, agriculture, and Smart City environments.

Wi-Fi HaLow extends Wi-Fi into the 900 MHz band, enabling the low power connectivity necessary for applications including sensor and wearables. Wi-Fi HaLow’s range is nearly twice that of today’s Wi-Fi, and will not only be capable of transmitting signals further, but also providing a more robust connection in challenging environments where the ability to more easily penetrate walls or other barriers is an important consideration. Wi-Fi HaLow will broadly adopt existing Wi-Fi protocols and deliver many of the benefits that consumers have come to expect from Wi-Fi today, including multi-vendor interoperability, strong government-grade security, and easy setup.

Many devices that support Wi-Fi HaLow are expected to operate in 2.4 and 5 GHz as well as 900 MHz, allowing devices to connect with Wi-Fi’s ecosystem of more than 6.8 billion installed devices. Like all Wi-Fi devices, Wi-Fi HaLow devices will support IP-based connectivity to natively connect to the cloud, which will become increasingly important in reaching the full potential of the Internet of Things (IoT). Dense device deployments will also benefit from Wi-Fi HaLow’s ability to connect thousands of devices to a single access point.
